About the mural:
In 2021, artist BAKIBAKI’s life shifted profoundly with the arrival of his children. From this transformation grew the idea for a mural exploring the theme of “family,” the companions of his everyday life. Departing from the style of his usual commissions, he created a deeply personal work: a portrait of his wife, both woman and mother, paired with traced drawings by his twin daughters, whose energy and curiosity continually offer him fresh perspectives. Across the surface, he scattered improvised variations of his signature BAKI motifs, once left without a home. The result is an intimate family landscape, a portrait of growth, resilience, and the winding path of life shared together.
About the artist:
BAKIBAKI (b. 1978, Osaka) is a Japanese artist recognized for his bold and rhythmic geometric “BAKI patterns.” His work reinterprets traditional Japanese motifs through the lens of contemporary street culture, creating a visual language that bridges past and present.
He began his artistic career in 2001 while studying at Kyoto City University of Arts, performing live painting as part of the duo DOPPEL. These early performances in clubs and music festivals established his roots in subculture and improvisation, a spirit that continues to shape his practice today.
Over the past two decades, BAKIBAKI has expanded his practice beyond live performance to large-scale murals, installations, and collaborations across art, fashion, and design. His works appear in cities across Japan and internationally, transforming public spaces into immersive canvases.
Since 2021, he has led the YODOKABE mural project in Jūsō, Osaka, a community-based initiative that connects local culture with international audiences, and contributes to the city’s cultural revitalization in the lead-up to Expo 2025.
