About Kyoko WALL Newspaper
Launched in March 2004, Kyoko Shimbun (The Fictional Newspaper) is a website aimed at delivering the facts of a fictional world. With its occasional satirical take on current events, it has come to symbolize an aspect of the social media era. In 2012, it was selected as a Jury Recommended Work at the 16th Japan Media Arts Festival, organized by the Agency for Cultural Affairs.
In the spring of 2024, Kyoko Shimbun celebrated its 20th anniversary with an exhibition held in Osaka, followed by a Tokyo exhibition. The focus of the Tokyo exhibition was on the typography (font design) used in the newspaper’s pages. The exhibition’s theme, “The Era of Typo News,” connected the fictional newspaper’s stance-spreading news that diverges from reality-with the idea of “typos” (mistyped keys).
Kyokou Wall Newspaper is a collaborative work by six typographers, all active in various fields of design and illustration. They handwrote fictional articles directly onto the wall, blending the unique typography with the content of each piece. Enjoy the delightful combination of the imaginative articles and their individual typographic expressions.
