ABOUT THE MURAL:
African Ginger painted one of his iconic portraits, depicting a man in stark black and white, shown in profile and built through bold, graphic lines. The realistic face is overlaid with expressive, doodle-like markings and sharp yellow accents that animate the gaze and add depth to the figure. Titled The Johannesburg Gaze, the mural brings the artist’s South African heritage to Tokyo, offering a powerful reflection on identity, memory, and presence within the stairwell space.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Seth Pimentel, also known as African Ginger, is a Johannesburg-based illustrator and painter born in 1995. Blending bold colors with emotional depth, his work explores identity, mental health, and youth culture. Influenced by skateboarding, punk, rock, and hip-hop, Seth has collaborated with global brands like Netflix, Converse, Red Bull, SneakerLab, Jameson, and Adobe, making him one of South Africa’s most dynamic young visual artists.
