At the beginning of October of 2022 we started hosting a weekly art event at BnA_WALL. Every Wednesday evening we invite participants to come and try their hand at sketching. We decided to keep the event’s name simple: Wednesday Sketch Club.

Wednesday Sketch Club is a two hour long sketch event that comes with pointers and tips from joining art professionals, unique and varying subject matter, all the necessary materials, music, and booze. As this event happens every week, there will always be something happening on hump day at BnA_WALL.

We anticipate that the patrons joining will be different week-to-week, so people will be able to interact with new art inspired individuals each time they participate. In fact, over the course of the first month we had a completely different assortment of participants each week.

The first month of sketching was done with graphite, although there are plans for introducing new mediums in the future. Each event starts with a few rounds of five minute sketches. The sketch time gradually increases, crescendoing with a 20 minute sketch – which is quite a long period of time to be sketching for novices, but a fun challenge nonetheless. Between each sketch period participants are free to walk around, have a drink, chat, and show each other their work.

One of the major focuses for Wednesday Sketch Club is to provide unique still life scenes, as well as live models, for each event. For those that are not art students or attending a professional class, this event is the perfect opportunity for them to experience a communal art class.

Wednesday Sketch Club is part art class, part community building. Participants can take the sketches as seriously as they like. Since not everyone is a professional – in fact, many people are attending their first ever sketch event – the environment feels almost more like a group mediation at times. BnA encourages drop-ins and spontaneity to be creative and gather with like minded individuals.

BnA_WALL’s basement level, known as ‘Factory’ is typically used for large events and for the painting of the large feature mural. This space was made to be created in, so it felt fitting that it be open to a wider, public audience. Our hope is that this event will continue to grow and evolve, but also that other types of creation events can also be held in this space in the future.
